One of the most common questions I get from expectant parents is, “What should I wear to my newborn photography session?” I completely understand — as a new mama, you might not feel quite like your pre-pregnancy self. You’re tired, adjusting to your new routine, and your body is still healing. As a mom myself, I know exactly how that feels.

Many new mothers tell me they don’t want to be in front of the camera, but I always encourage them to be included in at least a few photos. Your baby will only be this tiny for such a short time, and these first family portraits will mean the world to you later. Plus, let’s be honest — when Dad takes the pictures, we usually end up looking like a “hot mess!”

Relax — You’re in Good Hands

Coming to your newborn photo session may be one of the first times you’ve left the house with your new baby, and that can feel overwhelming. Don’t stress — when you arrive at my Frederick Maryland photography studio, you can truly relax. You can even take a nap on the couch if you need to! If you’d like to do your hair or makeup here before your session, that’s perfectly fine too — no judgment, just comfort.

What to Wear for Beautiful, Timeless Images

When it comes to choosing what to wear for your newborn photos, I recommend keeping things simple and neutral. Think soft tones like cream, beige, grey, blush, or white. Neutral colors help your images look cohesive and timeless while keeping the focus where it belongs — on your beautiful baby.

Choose something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. A flowy dress or simple top that shows a little skin is lovely — that gentle skin-to-skin connection between you and your baby photographs beautifully.

And don’t worry about your post-baby body — I use flattering posing and angles to highlight your best features. Every mother you see on my website had a baby just a week or two old in those photos — and you’ll look and feel just as beautiful.

Cherish These Early Moments

Your newborn session isn’t just about the photos — it’s about slowing down, relaxing, and soaking in these fleeting first days with your baby. I’ll make sure you leave the studio with stunning, heartfelt images that capture just how small and precious your little one truly is.
